Gemma Nugent, SoundLegal’s Principal Lawyer, is a construction, engineering and consulting contract specialist. She launched SoundLegal in 2019 after more than 8 years as Corporate Counsel to a global engineering and design consultant.

Gemma has worked extensively with subcontractors, contractors, principals and consultants on major infrastructure, construction, mining, oil and gas and consulting projects in both the private and public sector. She has drafted, reviewed, negotiated and delivered training on a wide variety of project and commercial agreements and has experience with all of the Australian Standard standard form contracts.  

After starting her legal career as the Associate to Justice Neville Owen at the Supreme Court of Western Australia, Gemma joined a boutique corporate litigation firm before becoming an in-house lawyer in 2010. Prior to studying law, Gemma was a policy advisor at the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Gemma chairs the board of the Australian Inclusion Group and volunteers her time at the Subiaco Justice Centre. She also serves on the board of the Fremantle Language Development Centre. Gemma has lectured in corporate and commercial law at Curtin Law School and spent time as a senior clinical supervisor in the John Curtin Law Clinic. Since 2022, Gemma has facilitated contract risk and management workshops at AIMWA.

Gemma is a member of the Law Society of Western Australia (where she sits on the Commercial Law Committee), the National Association of Women in Construction (where she sits on the Education Subcommittee), Women Lawyers WA and the Society of Construction Law Australia.
